Cigar Review: Illusione Epernay

Our first blog post should be special and what better way to celebrate a first than by enjoying a cigar? Cigars have become a staple at Lupo Motors, and rightfully so, the vibrant flavors and aromas can be enjoyed in silence or over profound conversation. One such specimen is the Illusione Epernay, a cigar I was fortunate enough to make an acquaintance with. For those who aren’t familiar with the Illusione Epernay, it was ranked third for cigar of year by Cigar Aficionado in 2011. Seven years later, it still packs its prestigious punch.

To sample such a exquisite stick, only one place would do.  Sturman’s Smokeshop, in downtown Boise, is ruggedly urbane with rustic charms that would make Ernest Hemingway feel at home. It’s 5 pm on a Thursday and the shop is bustling, but somehow we manage to grab two of the coveted four leather chairs and light up. Cigars abound, it’s almost impossible to distinguish the aroma the Epernay puts out in the crowded room, but the flavor begins to drown out all distractions. You’re immediately greeted with floral notes, leather, malt, coffee, hazelnut and cedar. It’s a whirlwind of flavors that envelope your taste buds. The draw is smooth and effortless, which is more attributed to the perfectly tempered walk-in humidor at Sturman’s. The cigar itself is Nicaraguan wrapped and packed, coming in around 6 inches long and 46 ring, priced under $11/stick.

Spicy notes begin to show through as the cigar turns from medium bodied to full the closer it smokes down. Despite the spice, there’s still so much sweetness to this cigar. It has tastes of honey and fruit to supplement the coffee-nutty flavors. The Epernay is truly showcasing it’s complexity at this point. I look down at my vintage Omega Seamaster to note the time; finished in an expedient 1 hour and 30 minutes, which is more of an indication of my impatience more than the cigar’s lifespan. The Illusione Epernay was a complete joy to smoke, and made even sweeter by the price!

If you find yourself in downtown Boise, and looking for the only location to smoke in doors, head to Sturman’s Smokeshop and mention our discount code: Lupo15. You’ll save 15% on any cigar you purchase, which makes this Illusione Epernay that much more irresistible.
