This 1970 280SL is the definition of attention to detail. Over the years of restoration, the previous owner of this car spared no expense and went through the smallest of details one at a time. The stack of documents, invoices and manuals created by him is immense and even details down to the exact type of oil which will keep the engine running its best. Completed in 2012, the reported numbers matching engine was gone through and rebuilt by Gernold Nisius, owner of SL-Tech, a master with SL Mercedes cars and Metric Motors. The new cylinder heads were fully ported and polished, as well as the intake manifold for optimal air intake. Very rare Euro-spec. Kolbenschmidt high-compression pistons were installed as well as a high-performance Euro camshaft, higher performance Mercedes headers, custom matched pipes by TimeValve, Euro fuel injection pump, new 123 electronic ignition and so much more were put into the new build of the engine. The rest of the drivetrain was completely gone through just as the engine was, with the axles being rebuilt by the pro’s at Paul Russell and Company. A 3.27 ratio was selected for the rear differential for better cruise ability, and the speedometer was rebuilt to reflect the correct speed from the new gearing. The transmission was resealed, cooling system gone through with a new higher power fan system installed, and too much more to list were completed.
Outside, the car is finished in a beautiful shade of red paint and brightly polished chrome and looks the part for a car with so much work completed to it. The hardtop was completely redone to match with new chrome trim and matching upholstery, the black soft top still looks just about brand new, and both latch and move as they should. Aluminum wheels were swapped for the original steels and they wear matching red covers. Inside, the interior is much the same with an incredible look and feel. New leather, carpets, stereo system and even heated and cooling seats put together an incredible interior. This is no doubt about it, the best 280SL that we have ever come across, and is definitely not one to miss out on.
